Whatever the reason you need extra storage space, shipping containers are perfect!   The following will help.

Guide to Custom Storage Containers

What Are You Storing?

While planning your custom storage containers, the first question is what will be stored?  Next, will you need temperature control? Will you need lighting and shelving units? Will you need special doors or fixtures to accommodate your goods?

These questions are essential to creating the right type of storage unit for your business. Portables360 can convert your container with air conditioning and temperature control. Also, you can customize interiors or add ventilation to your units based on your requirements.

What Size Do You Need?

Portables360 carries several different sizes of shipping containers that easily convert for storage. Our most common containers are 20 or 40 feet long. When your business needs maximum interior space, we recommend the larger containers. When you need more space than a 40-foot container can provide, we create multi-unit storage units.

Modifications

Do you need special modifications for your container?  For instance, side entrance, cargo doors, special cooling systems, and electric and plumbing systems are modifications easily added to your container.

We also place your container on a chassis to make it portable.  In addition, adjustments make it high enough to use near your shipping docks or with larger trucks unloading to the container.

Shelving and Storage Organization

We help you design shelving and storage space within your container to get maximum space.  Portables 360 has extensive experience in customizing shipping containers ensuring no space is wasted. Finally, we customize your shelving and storage space to accommodate any special sizes you require.

Flooring and Walls

The choices you make for the interior of your container is crucial to its functionality.  Selecting the right type of insulation and wall coverings is vital.  The right type of flooring helps you get the most use from your container.

Things you should consider include temperature control factors as well as how you clean the unit. If your storage goods require you to sweep the floor, regular wood flooring is perfect. However, if you need to hose out the unit frequently, metallic walls and epoxy covered flooring are your best choice.

Advantages of Converted Shipping Containers

Advantages of Converted Shipping Containers

Business leaders hear about companies converting shipping containers into new usable space. They see completed projects. However, are business leaders really aware of how beneficial  converted shipping containers are for their companies?  Below we outline several advantages.

Advantages of Converted Shipping Containers

Companies that need extra space find that converting shipping containers gives them the following benefits:

  1. Green Construction. Converting a used shipping container into a new usable space is called green construction. Your building helps reduce impact on the environment and minimizes the need for new materials.
  2. Budget Friendly. Converted shipping containers are the most economical way to expand space for your company. Shipping containers have a life span of at least 25 years.  This is far longer than a mobile trailer office or a temporary structure. Repurposed shipping containers are a quarter of the price you will pay for building a structure from scratch.
  3. Easy to Expand Current Space. If your business is already established in a preferred location, then moving would not be beneficial. Building a permanent structure to add space will not be financially feasible.  Also, what do local building code allow?  Using a converted shipping container gives you extra space for your business in a solid structure.  The expense is minimal.
  4. Different Sizes Available. Shipping containers come in 10, 20, and 40-foot sizes. Repurposing a container will meet your exact needs. When you need space for two different things, such as dry storage or cold storage, invest in two smaller trailers and have them positioned in one area.
  5. Portability. Shipping container structures are easily relocated. This is perfect for construction sites. Moving converted shipping containers is cost-effective and easy to complete. It is much easier than moving mobile home office structures.  Plus, the sturdy structure protects the interiors during the move.

There are many additional reasons that converting a shipping container into a workable space for your company is beneficial. In addition to cost savings, portability, and size, shipping containers offer a secure area for your business.  Your business is secure in a custom shipping container.

Shipping containers are airtight structures.  They are easy to secure.  In addition, they provide exceptional weather resistant properties. Your goods are protected from the weather as well as any unwanted guests.

There is no real outlet for children to have a safe place to be.  Finally, community leaders need to gather.  There is a practical solution.  For instance, a shipping container community center!

A city roundtable is held.  It is determined that Ashland needs a Community Center. They need a place where a mini-police station will be housed.  They need a place where there will be a public space for the community to enjoy.  One of the main goals is having free Wi-Fi available for families and children. This is a place where everyone benefits from the resources.

A limited budget will not stop Ashland.  Their odd-shaped property will work perfectly to build their new Community Center. In addition, the city wants to keep the Center mobile. It is possible they will obtain a larger space in the future.  Finally, this will allow them to easily move the Community Center.

The city chooses not to use a standard mobile home. While such homes are good for short-term projects, they often do not offer enhanced security and stability. So city officials decide to repurpose a shipping container into a new community center.

The New Community Center Is THE Pride of Ashland

After speaking with design experts about the shipping container structure, the city decides on three containers. One of the containers is a high-boy container that is higher than the other two. Because this is the middle container, it gives the Center a nice architectural style.

The containers are divided into a police sub-station, a mini library area, a public restroom area, a foyer, and a small kitchen area. The exterior is painted bright blue to catch the neighborhood’s attentio.  Finally, a beautiful playground area was built outside.

The Community Center is an absolute success! The neighborhood is flourishing with the resources that the Center provides. The city will stay within their budget.  They have a low-maintenance structure for the community to enjoy.

Shipping Container Foundations

Shipping Container Foundations

The most common question we are asked at Portables 360 is if a shipping container needs a concrete foundation before being put into place. In most cases, no. However, some situations may be more beneficial to have a slab poured before placing the container in place.

Consider the following for your container foundation:

Your Soil Type

In areas of the country, there is a higher concentration of clay in the soil. In these areas it is beneficial to have a gravel bed under the container.  Next, a foundation slab of concrete is poured.  Do these before placing your container on the ground.  This is very important for clay soil.  For instance, clay can shift with time.  You don’t want the container to sink in places and begin to sit unevenly.

Long-Term Placement

When a container stays in one spot for over a month, it will be best to have a gravel bed or concrete slab placed under the unit. This will keep the earth from shifting or from excessive moisture touching the bottom of the container.

Multi-Container Units

Shipping container foundations are necessary for all multi-container structures. You want to make sure that these structures are on solid, even ground to protect the building’s overall structural integrity.

Graded Bare Earth Placement

In most cases, it is fine to put the container straight on the ground if the area does not have a grade of over 2 percent. Since most of these containers move frequently, having it on the bare ground does not impact the container. Additionally, if you are in an area where the ground is very solid, placing the container on the ground will be very similar to placing it on a concrete slab.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

Whether you place your container on the ground, on a gravel pad, or a concrete slab, the most important factor is to keep the container even. Shipping container foundations are meant to keep the container flat so that everything inside the structure can function properly.

If you have any questions about the area you want to place your shipping container, speak with one of the knowledgeable staff members at Portables 360. They will help you decide if you need to create a pad for your container to sit on or if it can be placed on the ground.
